Who By Fire

Who By Fire Book Review and Presentation

Who By Fire picture

In October 1973, the poet and singer Leonard Cohen—thirty-nine years old, famous, unhappy, and at a creative dead end—traveled from his home on the Greek island of Hydra to Israel and to the chaos and bloodshed of the Sinai Front. Moving around the edge of the battlefield with a guitar and a group of local musicians, Cohen met hundreds of young soldiers, men and women at the worst moment of their lives. Those who survived never forgot the experience. In "Who By Fire," Matti Friedman gives a riveting account of Leonard Cohen, and Israel, as both poet and country were radically transformed by the Yom Kippur War.

We are privileged to host Cindy Spiegel, editor of "Who by Fire," by Matti Friedman to lead a discussion of this fascinating book before our Selichot Services on Saturday evening September 17, 2022.
