B’NAI SHALOM READS!
Join Myrna Spinrad as she leads discussion of Amos Oz’s masterful memoir, A Tale of Love and Darkness.
Oz was the chlld of ardent Zionists from Rovno and Odessa who made aliyah but never really left their European roots. Growing up in Jerusalem in the 1940s and ‘50s, Oz witnessed the birth of Israel and Israel’s struggles in its early years of statehood. At the same time, he witnessed his family’s private struggles, culminating in his mother’s suicide when he was just 12 years old.
Changing his last name from Klauzner to Oz (strength), Amos left Jerusalem to join Kibbutz Hulda and to become, finally and truly, Israeli.
You will find beautiful writing and penetrating insight in this triple memoir of a family, a boy, and a nation.
