Janice Colmar Michaelis has led Torah study at B'nai Shalom one Saturday morning a month for 20 years. This year, she will introduce a new source of insight into the discussion: the commentaries of Rabbi Don Isaac ben Judah Abravanel.

Born in Lisbon in 1437, Abravanel was a towering figure in both the Portuguese and Spanish courts, using his brilliance as a financier and diplomat to protect the Jews in both countries as best he could. As the class uses Abravanel's questions and answers about the parshayot under consideration, they will also learn about his life, and the lives of affluent and influential Jews at the end of the Golden Age of Spain until their expulsion in 1492. All are welcome to participate in this fascinating demonstration of how Torah is renewed in every age.
